Nationalist parties have existed for many years, but they quickly became radicalized because they realized that their goals could not be achieved through peaceful means. Prior to World War II, the Algerian People's Party (Party du People's Allegrian) was founded by Misali Hudge. The party was banned in the late 1930s and was replaced in the mid-1940s by the People's Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties (Movement del Le Triumph des Liberties Democratic (MTLD)).
