Independence Day is a day of family celebrations that include picnics and barbecues, with a strong emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon or hot dog eating competitions and sporting events such as baseball, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games.
Many people hang American flags outside their homes or buildings. Many parties set off fireworks, often accompanied by patriotic music. Extremely impressive fireworks are shown on television. Some employees use one or more of the holidays to create a long weekend to escape the heat at their favourite beach or vacation spot.
Independence Day is a patriotic holiday to celebrate the positive aspects of the United States. Many politicians attend public events to show their support for their country's history, heritage and people. Above all, people in the United States are grateful for the freedom and liberty fought by the first generation of many Americans today. The Statue of Liberty is a national monument associated with Independence Day.
